City of Bones by Cassandra Clare- Review

Updated: Mar 28, 2021

⭐⭐⭐/5 stars

I'll be putting this at the beginning of all of my posts, but DISCLAIMER: This is my own opinion, and if you have a different one about the book, that's fine! Please respect my thoughts on it, though.

“The boy never cried again, and he never forgot what he'd learned: that to love is to destroy, and that to be loved is to be the one destroyed.”

Cassandra Clare, City of Bones

City of Bones is an urban fantasy about a girl named Clary who lives in New York and discovers the magical world overlapping with the modern one after seeing a few teenage shadowhunters (who are a part of that world) kill a demon at a dance club.

Characters:

Honestly, I didn't like the main character, Clary. First of all, the author's name is Cassandra Clare and she named the main character of her story Clary.

But that's just a small pet peeve. Clary could sometimes be really annoying, whiny, and insensitive. There was a scene where she was being mean to a certain character (I won't say who because of spoilers) that made me hate her even more.

I liked Jace, though. He was brave, funny, and cocky, but he got a little annoying towards the end. I also I found it weird how he called Clary 'little girl'.

I really liked Alec and Magnus and cannot wait for more of them. I also liked Isabelle and hope to see more of her character. Though when Jace described her as a warrior... and the book didn't show it? No. Just no. One moment really ticked me off:

When they were fighting a demon, Isabelle lashed out at it only... twice with her whip. Then she let Jace and Alec do the rest of the work.

Lastly, I thought that Simon was a cool character, but I feel like in City of Ashes (the book following City of Bones) won't include him as much since he's just a regular human. :(

Plot:

I enjoyed the plot; it kept me entertained and it was interesting. There weren't any parts that felt too fast paced or too slow. I know my characters section was pretty long, but I don't think I have much to say about the plot besides that.

Relationships:

I really liked the Jace and Clary ship and thought it was going well. There's a lot of funny banter between them. Though something happened that I really want to rant about but... spoilers. So I must hold my emotion in.

And I felt like it was unnecessary to include Simon as another potential relationship for Clary because we all knew how it would end up. And I don't even think that's a spoiler.

Worldbuilding:

I loved how the Shadowhunter world existed and overlapped with the modern one. And I thought the concept was very interesting but I didn't understand some of the shadowhunter's magic.

Just a note, but you may have noticed how my character section was much longer than the other ones. I think that characters are my favorite part of books so I tend to analyze them much more than the other aspects of a story.

So yeah. I enjoyed City of Bones, but at the same time had some problems with it which is why I rated it a 3/5 and not a 5.

I think that a main character can be mean, but not in a pathetic way because that's just annoying. I read a lot of books where the main character is very cruel or morally grey. I think you can buy the book at any bookstore. But yeah, if you haven't heard of the Shadowhunter world, just know that there are a looooot of books by this author and in this world.

I think that a mean character can work. However, they shouldn't be the main character. They should also have sufficient character growth. Iv'e been listening to an audio book where one of the characters was being a jealous jerk that made me think "Why you do dat tho?". However, I could see her perspective (even though I didn't agree with it) and she had character growth. Anyway, I think I might pick up this book to see if I would like it. Where can I buy the book?
