House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas: Review

⭐⭐/5

DISCLAIMER: If you have different opinions on the book, that's completely fine! Just please respect my thoughts.

“That's the point of it, Bryce. Of life. To live, to love, knowing that it might all vanish tomorrow. It makes everything that much more precious.”

Sarah J. Maas, House of Earth and Blood

Age rating: 16+

Crescent City is about our main character Bryce, and when most of her friends die in a brutal attack, she has to team up with an Archangel named Hunt in order to solve the case. Of course, Bryce and Hunt's fury at each other turns to something more passionate towards the end of the story.

Characters:

I will say that the characters in this book were more diverse than Sarah J. Maas's usual cast which was great. She also talked about body image in this book, which is important.

Bryce:

I liked Bryce: she was brave, loyal, and fun! Though I didn't like how everything about her was 'beautiful' or 'attractive' and every male was found her that way.

Hunt:

I... did not like Hunt. Honestly, in the next book, I hope Bryce dumps him. He was annoying, and basically every SJM male made into one.

Ruhn:

Ruhn was a loyal brother, and I loved how we get to see a lot of his and Bryce's relationship (Brotherly and sisterly only, thank God) change through the story.

All of these characters down below we didn't see much of, but I hope we see more of in the next book!

Juniper:

Juniper was amazing. She was fierce, loyal, and a great friend to Bryce.

Fury:

Fury was a dangerous assassin and though she stayed away from Bryce after Danika's death (it isn't a spoiler- happens around page 60 and is in the synopsis), she still seems really cool.

Hypaxia:

We didn't see much of her, but she's a sarcastic, clever, and kind medic that could (possibly?) be Ruhn's ship in book 2.

Plot:

The plot was so dragged out and I found myself bored a lot of the time. Only towards the climax did I get a little more invested.

I will say that there were many twists, some of which I didn't see coming. Some were... pretty predictable.

Worldbuilding:

This world was amazing, and I loved all the different species and Houses in it, plus the tension between them. Crescent City was different than Sarah J. Maas's other worlds and more modern.

Before I end this review, I also want to say that in Crescent City, there was a TON of unnecessary cursing that didn't even make sense in most sentences.

So overall, this book was just okay.
