“I've spent years living safely to secure a longer life, and look where that's gotten me. I'm at the finish line but I never ran the race.”

Adam Silvera, They Both Die at the End

This book is set in a world where you receive a call from Death-Cast the day you die. You don't know how, but just that you'll die on that day. Rufus and Mateo receive these calls and meet each other on the Last Friend app, an app that can help you find someone to spend your last day with. They explore the city and go on many adventures, living their last day to the fullest.

Characters:

I didn't like Rufus at the beginning since the first line in his perspective was about him beating up his ex's new boyfriend. ...Yeah. Not the best introduction. I liked the change Mateo went through during the story, though. And Rufus did get better as the book went on. I also really liked Lidia, even though she we only saw her for a brief time during the story.

Plot:

Okay you might be thinking: Why would the author spoil the ending?

Well I think that this book isn't more focused on the ending but the journey. ...I'm not sure if I explained that well. But yeah, I thought that the pacing of the plot was great and I was always excited to pick the book back up.

Relationships:

I really liked Rufus and Mateo's relationship, even though they got together in one day. I usually don't like insta love or relationships that move too fast, but surprisingly I still enjoyed it.

And I have one more thing to add:

I was afraid that I wouldn't cry while reading this book (since almost everyone who's read it said that they did). But I actually cried and that never happens when I read. My heart was SHATTERED because of this book. SHATTERED.

But overall, I really enjoyed They Both Die At the End. I can't think of any problems I had with it, though. And that's pretty rare since I find even the smallest things to critique in books.

Yeah I felt like a pretty shitty person when I didn’t cry when I finished it a few days ago...it was depressing.
